Koen Moreno – Picture by Stephanie Lynn

Tonight was a busy night as my left eye spent half the time getting stats for the August All-Star team article set for Friday. The right eye kept a lookout on the MiLB games. And there were several great individual performances today worth talking about and taking a look at.

Web Gem of the Day

This all happened so quickly for the Cubs 9th round pick Jonathan Long. Weird thing is that he had mostly been third until tonight.

Dingers of the Day

Brennen Davis went 2-for-5 tonight for South Bend in his fourth game in his rehab stint. He smacked his first dinger and a double. It was good to see Davis start to bounce back

Josh Rivera had a good night too as he hit his first dinger at South Bend.

Tyler Santana had his best start for South Bend since moving to the rotation. Santana went 6 innings and struck out 6 while allowing just 2 runs as South Bend won 8-3.

Starting Pitcher of the Day

My guy Koen Moreno gave up a first inning run and then he dropped the hammer for four more innings. He struck out 6 while allowing just that one run. He did give up 5 hits, but the key to Moreno’s impressive season is that he is eliminating walking guys. Tonight, he only issued one free pass. His ERA on the year is now 2.74. In August, as a starter, it is 2.04!

Brett Bateman went 2-for-4 with a RBI and Miguel Pabon did the same and scored two runs as the Pelicans won 3-2. Erian Rodriguez had 5 Ks in 3 innings of 1-run relief and Scarlyn LeBron pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Tennessee Struggles Again

Owen Caissie went 2-for-3 in a 9-0 loss. That is all.

As for Iowa…

They fell behind early and often in a 9-6 loss to Toledo. Jake Slaughter hit his 22nd home run and drove in three while Luis Vazquez homered and drove in 2. Unfortunately, the I-Cubs only had 4 hits on the night.

I will be back in the morning with my IFA Class grades for 2023.
