Brian Kalmer – Picture by Larry Kave/Myrtle Beach Pelicans

I was a little anxious today. Part of that nervous energy was from the fact that tomorrow is the first day with students and that’s always an exciting but anxious time. I will be fine when the morning comes as I’ve done this 30 times before. I was also anxious because I saw a picture of Parker Chavers Instagram where he was on a plane. Then I had to wait all day for the official word to come out; and it did at about 5 o’clock.

If you haven’t checked out all of today’s transactions, please do so.

Next week should be a big week for moves on both Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday as the Arizona Complex League concludes their season on the 22nd. We will be seeing several players from Arizona come up and play in Myrtle Beach the last 2+ weeks of the season. Most of them will probably be position guys like Alexis Hernandez, and possibly Zyhir Hope and Alfonsin Rosario and maybe even Christopher Paciolla.

But today’s post is really all about the games.

Let’s look at how they began.

South Bend got started a little early at 5:30 tonight. And they got on the board first against West Michigan as Moises Ballesteros went yard for the fourth time since getting promoted to South Bend.

As for Tennessee, I was really looking forward to Kohl Franklin taking on Rocket City. Yesterday, Kohl was named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week. He is not going back-to-back as he gave up 7 runs, 6 of which were earned in 2/3 of an inning.

I was also excited for the Myrtle Beach pitching matchup tonight because one of my favorite players, Koen Moreno, was making a start after having a great three months as a reliever. I figured he would not go more than four innings, but 60 or 70 pitches would be good. He threw 63.

Let’s See How The Night Ended

3 Hit Club

Yup, this is Matt Shaw. High-A does not seem to be testing his skills much. He is now up to .415 with a 1.149 OPS at South Bend.

4 Hit Club – Hitter of the Day

Brian Kalmer is turning out to be quite the find for an 18th round pick. Tonight, he hit a homer and a double. He went 4-for-5 with 5 RBI.

Starting Pitcher of the Day

Koen Moreno got it done. He went four innings. He did not allow a run. He walked just one and struck out 5. He rocked it!

Comeback of the Day

PCA hit a two run dinger in the tenth to give Iowa with a W. That will increase the hype for him to come up next month. He’s now hitting .289 at Iowa with a 1.029 OPS. That’ll do.

Game Scores

Myrtle Beach – They won 11-9 in extras, thanks in part to Kalmer. Brett Bateman also had 3 RBI on the day. Love him!

South Bend – They lost 3-1 to West Michigan giving up two runs in the seventh and eighth.

Tennessee – They were down 7-0 and got within 2 before the Trash Pandas topped it off and finally won 10-6.

Iowa – PCA did at 5-3 in extras.
