Today turned out to be a big hurry up and wait kind of day. The Cubs only made one small move and that involved trading pitchers Manny Rodriguez, and Adrian Sampson from Iowa to Tampa Bay for pitcher Josh Roberson, who is now on Iowa. And the big news in terms of transactions today saw the official announcements of Pete Crow-Armstrong going to Iowa, Cade Horton to Tennessee, Fabian, Pertuz to Tennessee, Carlos Guzman back to Tennessee, and Matt Shaw and Josh Rivera to South Bend. That’ll do.

And there was baseball played…

The strange thing about today was that the affiliates waited until the last possible moment to get their starting lineups out. Normally those go out anywhere from 4 o’clock to five. South Bend did not get theirs out until almost game time at 6 pm.

And then, no sooner than the game started that there was an explosion of action! I didn’t know which game to watch, to be honest. The Pelicans put up for runs in the first. Meanwhile, in South Bend, Matt Shaw tripled in his High A debut, and then came around to score on a James Triantos home run to make it 2-0 South Bend. And that was before I could even check what Tennessee was doing. And when I did, they were on their way to putting up a four spot in the first, too! That was punctuated by a Pablo Aliendo home run. And then the Pelicans game was delayed due to weather.

As the night wore on, two things were evident. One, the prospects had lots of hits. Two, Luis Devers pitched his butt off.

Starting Pitcher of the Day

Mr. Devers threw five scoreless innings tonight for South Bend in their romp over Wisconsin. He struck out 5 and only allowed one run. He tossed 66 pitches with 45 strikes. Caleb Kilian was close. He went 6 innings, gave up a run, and struck out 6. He is starting to string together some starts in a row now.

Debut of the Day

Matt Shaw had a triple and single as he went 2-for-5 at South Bend.

Senor Encindido

That is Christian Franklin is hotter than hot right now. Since coming back from his time on the Development List, all he does is hit home runs. He hit his fourth in the last three weeks.

The 3 Hit Club

Moises Ballesteros is just 19 and is killing it at High-A South Bend. He hit .368 in July and went 3-for-4 tonight to start off August right.

Tennessee had 3 players in the club tonight as Anyd Weber, Owen Caissie and Brad Beasley did it up!

The 3 RBI Club

The hitter of the day was none other than Owen Caissie who cranked out 2 HRs, both oppo shots today. In total, he drove in three.

Joining Owen in this exclusive club is Pablo Aliendo who got all his RBI on one swing. That is pretty efficient of him.

James Triantos won admission after driving in Matt Shaw in the 8th with a triple. James also drove himself and Shaw in with a first inning homer.

Game Results

Myrtle Beach – Delayed with Pelicans up 4-0 after half an inning.
South Bend – They won 9-2.
Tennessee – Ditto
Iowa – They lost 8-2 to Toledo.
