With tropical storm Idalia, dropping a ton of rain in South Carolina, the Pelicans got the night off. I don’t know if they’ll play tomorrow. It all depends on what has to be cleaned up in Charleston.

As for the other three teams, they all got started pretty early.

Hitter of the Day

Jared Young provided all the offense for Iowa tonight. He hit two home runs in the first two innings and drove in six. Iowa would not score again until the top of the ninth as they won 7 to 1.

The bullpen was outstanding for the Cubs as they are a little shorthanded right now. Stephen Gonsalves went 1.2 innings to start and he was followed by Luke Little, Brad Boxberger, Chris Clarke, Bailey Horn, and Michael Rucker.

With that in mind, Iowa is going to need a starter and soon, Lots of guys could come up in the next week and help them.

As for South Bend…

Brennen Davis had his second good game in a row as he went 2-for-5. However, the rest of the Cubs could not string together much of a rally. Christian Franklin went yard again but that was about the only highlight. Connor Noland went six innings and gave up two earned runs and struck out six but South Bend ultimately lost 3-2.

As for the Smokies…

They fell behind 2 to 0, in the second inning, only to see Cole Roederer put the Smokies in front in the bottom of the frame with a three run jack.

Biloxi would come back in the top of the third to tie it up and that’s the way it stayed for five more innings until Biloxi took the lead in the top of the eighth at 5 to 3. Cole drove in another run in the eighth with a sac fly to close to within one run. However, Tennessee left two on to end the eighth and Biloxi expanded their small lead in the ninth from 1 to 3 runs. And 7-4 is how it ended.

Cade Horton went five innings and struck out seven and gave up three runs, only two of which were earned.

Matt Shaw did debut at 2B tonight. He went 1-for-5.
