Brandon Birdsell – Picture by Todd Johnson

It was a busy day at school for me so I didn’t really get to check up on the day games until I got home. Needless to say, the box scores were a little bit different than I expected just based on who was going to be pitching.

Starting Pitcher of the Day

Brandon Birdsell showed again this afternoon why he does not belong in High-A South Bend. He went five scoreless frames, allowed just 3 hits as he walked two while striking out five. It was a masterful performance as Birdsell lowered his ERA from 0.57 to 0.44, now the lowest starting pitcher in the organization.

As for South Bend, it was a tie game heading into the ninth at 3-3 when Cedar plated 6 runs in the top of the ninth. The Cubs did plate two in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-5, the final score. Scottie McKeon had himself another day at the plate. He went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI and another triple. His average is up to .353 and his OPS is now over 1.000!

As for the Smokies, they scored seven runs in the middle innings and then the bullpen held on to win 7-6. Owen Ciassie hit a dinger, his fifth, and Haydn McGeary left the yard in his second game with the Smokies.

Reliever of the Day

Chris Kachmar had his second straight great outing. Last time, he struck out 6 in 3 innings. Today, it was 5 Ks in 2 innings.

Rough Night for the Pelicans

Myrtle Beach turned it around today against Columbia. The Bird jumped out to a 6-0 lead behind 4 unearned runs. It didn’t hurt that the Birds had Cade Horton on the bump. He went 4 innings but he did reveal that he was human as he gave up 2 runs. Then again, he struck out seven. Catcher Miguel Pabon continued his under reported season as he drove in 3 runs while going 2-for-4. As well, pitcher Brandon Noriega struck out four of his first six batters he faced.

Then the wheels fell off as the Fireflies came back from an 8-2 deficit to win 10-8 on a walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth. That’s a rough way to lose.

The Reivaj-O-Meter

Tonight, he just continues to show up and he went 2-for-5. The meter goes up to .347.

As for Iowa…

They got a piece of what they were dishing out last week as they lost 10-2 to Columbus. Oof!
