Brennen Davis – Pic by Dylan Heuer/Iowa Cubs

As I’m writing this, I am on a bus with a bunch of kids and parents who are asleep as we head back from Springfield from participating in Illinois history day. It was a pretty good weekend as the kids had a lot of fun checking out the other projects and also visiting the Lincoln sites

But you’re not here to hear that. So, let’s get right to the day in baseball. There were on;y 3 games as Myrtle Beach was rained out.

Scores

Iowa

Yeah, the Iowa Cubs put up 11 runs today as their offense is turning into a juggernaut. Nelson Velazquez hit a two run homer, Matt Mervis hit a solo shot, Brennen Davis also hit a solo homer as did Christopher Morel. For the day, Davis went three for five with two RBI.

Chris Clarke also returned to action as a Cub as he threw three scoreless Innings in his AAA debut. He gave up one hit and struck out five, but did not allow a run. That is excellent to see!

South Bend

The Cubs played early this afternoon and I got to see quite a bit of that game on my computer. Connor Noland looked good as he went 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and he allowed one run. So far, his ERA is 2.31.

As for the offense, Bradlee Beasley drove in 2 on the day going one for three as the Cubs improved to 9-6. They currently sit one game back of first place in the western division of the Midwest league behind Beloit.

Tennessee

Starting pitcher Porter Hodge had his best start of the year tonight. He went four scoreless innings while striking out three and scattering four hits. That was about the only highlight of the night for the Smokies. Peyton Remy made his 2023 season debut and promptly gave up four runs in just one inning of work. Michael McAvene came out in relief and he only lasted 2/3 of an inning while giving up four runs as well. At that point, I stopped watching as the final score turned out to be 11 to 0.
