As of tomorrow, the Cubs will complete their second week of spring training games. It’s going by quickly. The Cubs have just a little over two weeks left to make roster decisions about who heads back to Chicago. No one is expecting a lot of prospects to break camp with the club. But let’s talk a little bit about what we’re seeing from several prospects playing with the major league ball club right now as well as 9 other things I am thinking about spring training and prospects.

1. Legit

Both Jeremiah Estrada and Hayden Wesneski have put themselves in a good position to make the ball club and be on the 26-man roster for opening day. Both are pitching well in spring training and that has come as no surprise to anyone following both over the past eight months.

2. First in Line

Cam Sanders and Darius Hill have shown that they are more than capable of doing well against big leaguers and have moved right to the top of the list for the players the Cubs could call up. Depending how Brennen Davis does that first month or two in Iowa, he could push Hill aside. However, 99% of me thinks Cam should be in Chicago on March 30. The stuff is just too good.

3. Leeper

We finally got to see Ben Leeper in a game this past week and it was a lot of fun as he held his own just fine. I hope he really gets a chance to show more of what he can do in Chicago at some point this summer.

4. Fun Time

A lot of prospects have been playing in MLB games due to injuries. It’s exhilarating to see Pete Crow-Armstrong start to figure some things out after a week of playing against major league talent. It took him a while to shake the rust off, but he has just been fantastic this week in the field and the bat is starting to come around.

5. The Jaguar

I’m not necessarily counting the days until minor league season opens, but it begins four weeks from today, I’ll be in Davenport to see Kevin Alcantara debut with the South Bend Cubs. That’s going to be an exciting weekend of baseball. And, yes, he will be joined by a lot of other top prospects in the Midwest League.

6. Extra Starting Pitching Looks Good.

Ben Brown, Caleb, Killian, and Javier Assad have all looked fantastic in relief over the last two weeks. Part of me is wondering if Assad is going to continue to pitch that well that he puts himself either in the bullpen or at the top of the list to get called up as a starter. Then again, Caleb Kilian is no slouch this spring either. I don’t remember having so many starting pitchers be ready to help the major league club.

7. The Return of Phil

Minor league games should be firing up anytime soon and with that there should be some Arizona Phil reports returning. We are now starting to see video come out of minor leaguers facing off against minor leaguers in batting practice.

8. Time

My busy season at school officially ends today as the kids have to have their history fair projects turned in. We will find out next week what their scores are.

9. More Ball Coming

There’s still a lot of baseball left to be played over the next 2+ weeks, nothing is written in stone or in ink.

10. My Love of the Game Is Still There

Watching Marquee every day when I get home from school or academic team has just been so much fun this spring I can’t wait for the real thing next month!

I will see you Sunday with some news of the week and possible more draft talk.
