Pete Crow-Armstrong – Picture by Todd Johnson

This week was a very dull week in terms of actual news about the Cubs’ minor league system. Sure, they were pictures from spring training all over Twitter along with some video, but that was about it. There were no prospect lists or farm system rankings. To be quite frank, I wouldn’t have noticed because academic team/scholastic bowl  season started and that keeps me pretty busy after school and will continue to do so for the next two and a half weeks.

MLB Pipeline put out an article this week that I enjoyed reading on prospects for each organization that were battling for a roster spot and they picked Matt Mervis for the Cubs. I would also include the Jeremiah Estrada is also in the mix to make the big league club how to spring training. They said this about Matt:

Mervis has little left to prove after slashing .309/.379/.605 with 36 homers and leading the Minors with 78 extra-base hits, 310 total bases and 119 RBIs while rising from High-A to Triple-A — then tying for the Arizona Fall League lead with six long balls. The 2020 undrafted free agent from Duke has legitimate left-handed power, though Chicago’s offseason signings of Eric Hosmer and Trey Mancini may make at-bats harder to find.

Pete Crow-Armstrong also did an interview this week where talked about what he intends to learn this spring as he plans to soak up knowledge from the big leaguers, including Cody Bellinger. Pete loves to learn as evidenced in this discussion with Jordan Bastian of MLB.com..

Quote of the Week

This goes out to Brennen Davis, who looks like he is on a mission this spring to recapture his prospect glory and to make it to Chicago this year. If so, Greg Huss’ faith in him will be rewarded.

Picture of the Week

There’s a lot of talent in this picture. Bodes well for the future.

Video of the Week

A good hype video always does the trick.

Coming up on North Side Bound

With the minor league camp just about ready to officially start, I will have a couple articles on some storylines to follow during March. Greg Zumach will have his top 100 draft prospect list hopefully later this week and Greg Huss is working on a couple of things as well. Make sure and follow our own Rich Biesterfeld on Twitter as he is putting out some pictures every day from spring training.

Jam of the Week

While I still have Polyphia in constant rotation on my iPod and phone, I am pulling this week’s jam out of my back pocket with the North Mississippi All-Stars classic version of Po Black Maddie off of their debut LP.
