Players of the Day for August 20, 2022 – PCA Lights Up the Night while Gallardo Shoots Down the Sky Carp

You’re probably wondering why the Players of the Day is coming out the next day. I have been battling a cold the past week (non-Covid related) and I laid down on the couch with a couple of the pups in the office during South Bend’s rain delay and I was out like a light. So, let’s get to the belated edition of players of the day.

Hitter of the Day

This is all PCA’s. On a night where MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis was in the South Bend Cubs’ media booth, PCA put on a show going 4-for-4 with an intentional walk in the bottom of the ninth. Three of those four hits were doubles. He’s been on fire this month hitting .324 with a .397 on-base percentage and a .515 slugging percentage.

Starting Pitcher of the Day

Richard Gallardo probably could have gone six innings had South Bend skipper Lance Rymel let him. After working around some early trouble, Gallardo threw 5 innings of one-run ball and struck out three. This month, he’s been very good with a 1.72 ERA in 3 starts at South Bend. However, he only has 6 Ks in 15.2 innings this month. Still, he’s able to get guys to get themselves out.

Reliever of the Day

While Bailey Horn was very good last night for Tennessee, along with Danis Correa in Iowa, Joe Nahas and Sheldon Reed were outstanding in crunch time for South Bend. Reed struck out two in the top of the ninth to set up South Bend’s walk-off win. But it was Nahas who made that possible an inning earlier.

After an error placed men on second and third with no outs to start the eighth, Nahas went to work. He got a pop out for out number one. He got a ground ball to the third baseman and Luis Verdugo threw a strike to nail the runner at the plate. And, finally, in the driving rain, Nahas struck out the final batter to kill the rally and get out of the inning still tied before the rain delay began.

On a Side Note

Jordan Wicks was removed from Tennessee’s game in the bottom of the second after he shook his arm. Hopefully, it was just a cramp or soreness and nothing is structurally wrong. We hope he gets well soon.

Check out The Weekly, which came out an hour ago, and I will be back at noon with the Rookie League Recap.
