Jordan Wicks – Picture by Todd Johnson

I didn’t really get to see a lot of baseball live today as I spent most of the afternoon watching TV with my wife before I head back to school. But I did get to see about half of the Tennessee game which came down to the wire. I really like that Tennessee club quite a bit. Right now they’re the most fun team going because they have some guys that can just crank some balls right out of the yard. Today was no different as Alexander Canario hit his system leading 28th home run. He just obliterated this ball in today’s “DINGER OF THE DAY.”

Fun Tweet of the Day

Yes, it belongs to Fergie Jenkins!

Good News of the Day

Brennen Davis looks to be ready for game action in a rehab assignment to Mesa.

Stat of the Day

This is almost unbelievable.

Hitter of the Day

Even though Canario did well today going 2-for-4, the hitter of the day was none other than his teammate Yonathan Perlaza who wound up just a single short of the cycle. He started off with a double, than a home run, and had a triple and he came up in the bottom of the eighth needing a single but flew out to Anthony. I actually feel bad for him because you could tell that he wanted it.

Starting Pitcher of the Day

Jordan Wicks wins it for the third time in the last two weeks as he threw four frames today and struck out for. He allowed one run even though he did walk three. That lowered his ERA at Double-A to 3.60. For the month, Wicks now has a 0.69 ERA in August and has struck out 19 batters in 13 innings in three games. His batting average against is just a measly .170.

Reliever of the Day

Ben Leeper continues his excellent run. Today, he faced five batters and struck out four of them in getting the save for Iowa. I am about 101.2% sure that he’s ready for Chicago. The question is whether the Cubs want to start his clock now or next year? It’s a tricky question. He doesn’t need to be put on the 40-man this fall but if the Cubs do decide to bring him up, someone else is going to be out of a job for a long time.

I will be back in the morning looking at playoff chases and who is hot in August so far in “The Breakdown.”
