Both DSL Teams off to Promising Starts on Opening Day

And just like that, the Dominican Summer League began today. Both Cub squads came away winners on the day with the Red team cranking out 11 hits to win 6-2 over the Pirates Black in 7 innings. The Blue team beat the Mets 1 team 9-3 as the Cubs used 13 hits and 3 Mets errors to fill up the box score.

Who were today’s “Future Stars of the Day?”

Red Team

*Darlyn DeLeon went 2-for-4 on the day and scored a couple of runs. He played second base all game.

*Adan Sanchez hammered two singles and a triple as he went 3-for-3 in his Cubs debut.

*Daniel Benschop, the athletic OF from Aruba, went 2-for-2 and he was also hit by a pitch

*On the mound, 18-year-old Yenrri Rojas went 4 innings and gave up a run on 2 hits. He did not walk anybody and the young righty struck out 3. That’s a pretty impressive start to his Cubs career.

Blue Team

*Leadoff hitter Raul Guzman was on base four times and scored twice today. He went 2-for-3, was hit by a pitch, and walked.

*Shortstop Jefferson Rojas rocked it going 3-for-4, all singles. Rojas also drove in two on the day. That’s pretty cool for the 17-year-old, one of the Cubs’ top IFA signings from 2022.

* Jose Herrera hit a HR in the second inning to give the Cubs an early lead. The next time up, Herrera was plunked in the elbow and removed from the game.

*Catcher Jairo Diaz went 2-for-4 on the day before he was pulled from the blowout.

*IF Geuri Lubo also had two hits today in 5 ABs.

*Pitcher Joel Jimenez came on in relief and threw three innings. He gave up one unearned run and struck on four while only allowing one hit.
