This is getting to be a regular occurrence!

That video pretty sums up the night for the Smokies as they shut down and no-hit the Montgomery Biscuits 5-0.

That pretty much seals the deal for two-thirds of today’s awards.

Peyton Remy is our Starting Pitcher of the Day as he went 6 IP with 8 Ks and no hits, all on just 65 pitches. Relievers Danis Correa and Eury Ramos finished off the Biscuits as they threw 2 IP with 3 Ks and 1 IP with 2 KS, respectively, with no hits. They will share the Reliever of the Day award.

The threesome had some help from the offense as Darius Hill went yard along with Bryce Ball, who went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI to move his average up to .296 with an .869 OPS. He is showing he is the most improved player in the system.

But that was not the only game of the day.

Myrtle Beach struggled against Charleston to lose their second game of the week, this time 5-1. Kevin Alcantara and BJ Murray had good nights but that was about it.

Iowa won this afternoon in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth as defensive replacement Narciso Crook laced a single to win it 7-6 for the Cubs.

In South Bend, the W flag might not be coming down for a while as they won their eighth game in a row by squeaking out 6-5 victory over Fort Wayne. Fabian Pertuz drove in 3 runs and Cole Roederer went 2-for-4 in his second game back with South Bend and Matt Mervis did the same.

For me, the highlight of the South Bend game was when Jeremiah Estrada entered with the game on the line in the eighth inning and two men on and just shut down Fort Wayne for 1.2 innings and stalled their comeback. For the year, Estrada now has an ERA of 0.82 and has 16 Ks in 11 IP. Unfortunately, he pitched on the wrong night to win the Reliever of the Day award. Any other night, the reliever award would have been all his.

And the final award…

The Hitter of the Day goes to Nelson Maldonado of Iowa who went 2-for-4 with a HR and 4 RBI on the day. He is now hitting .292 after two weeks in Iowa. He is showing he belongs in Triple-A and probably should have been there to begin the year. And, if he keeps it up, Chicago is not far away and he could be heading there as early as next month.
