Today was one of those strange days where every affiliate won but it was not a clean sweep as Myrtle Beach split their twin bill with Salem. South Bend won 2-0 behind a brilliant pitching performance from DJ Herz, Bailey Reid, Eduarniel Nunez, Nicholas Padilla, and Jeremiah Estrada. The Smokies pounded away at Birmingham again but this time it was the bottom of the lineup that did most of the damage in their 9-4 win. Bryce Windham and Yonathan Perlaza each had two hits while Andy Weber had 3. Meanwhile in Iowa, the I-Cubs had big days from several players who will talk about later and an outstanding pitching performance from Caleb Kilian to win 10-3.

Being that today is a Sunday, it’s time to get right to it.

The Web Gem of the Day belongs to Luis Verdugo for this dandy!

PJ Higgins went five for five today for Iowa. That doesn’t happen very often. When it does, that guy usually wins Hitter of the Day. Higgins beat out Jared Young who homered and had three hits on the day and James Triantos went 3-for-3 for Myrtle Beach.

When it came to the Starting Pitcher of the Day, Iowa’s Caleb Kilian was today’s stand out. He went five innings and did not allow a run. He gave up four hits and struck out five and lowered his season ERA to a minuscule 1.46. He’s looking more and more like he has next. If you are in need of a Japanese translation, here you go.

Those two awards were obvious and easy to select.

The Reliever of the Day was a little bit harder. It came down to the final game of the day in Tennessee. The question was would South Bend’s Nicholas Padilla’s two scoreless frames with 3K’s hold up or would somebody from Tennessee better that standard. Tennessee pretty much emptied their pen in the last three innings and nobody pitched more than inning coming down the stretch. So, congratulations to Mr. Padilla as his ERA now sits at 1.80!

I will be back with “The Breakdown” in the morning and Jimmy Nelligan will have the “Game of the Week” tomorrow afternoon!
