The Cubs system is good for one no-hitter a year and this season it took just one month to see an absolute masterpiece on the mound. In his first professional start, Walker Powell led the charge for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans’ second no-hitter in two years against the Columbia Fireflies.
The big-bodied Powell had been used as a multi-inning reliever to this point in the season, but got to showcase his stuff to begin the festivities in this one. The only batter to get on base against him was from an error that he committed in the second inning. He struck out six batters in his five innings of work.
Powell was followed by masterful performances from Adam Laskey and Jake Reindl. Both guys generated some silly swings-and-misses from opposing hitters, with Laskey setting down one on strikes and walking a batter while Reindl worked two innings with four punch outs.
A special shoutout to Ethan Hearn for his work behind the plate. Pitchers absolutely love throwing to him and he gets the best out of his guys on the bump. We know he loves to show his emotion on the field, and tonight was the perfect opportunity to do so!
