Today was a day filled with errands and stuff to do around the house. As a result, I did not get to see as much baseball as I wanted until about 3:30. That was enough to see most of the South Bend game and all of Myrtle Beach and Tennessee. It was cool to see all 3 of those teams get wins today and to see that Myrtle Beach is tied for first place with Charleston, a team they struggled with the first week.

Anyways, today’s affairs were an interesting lot as we picked one winner from each of today’s winning teams.

Hitter of the Day Matt Mervis cranked out 2 homers including a 3 run shot in the bottom of the eighth to give South Bend a come from behind victory. He wound up with 5 RBIs on the day while going 2-for-4.

The Starting Pitcher of the Day award was very close today. Porter Hodge barely edged out Riley Thompson in a close vote. Hodge went 5 innings, allowing just 3 hits, 0 runs, and he struck out 4. Thompson only went three, but also struck out 4 while only allowing 1 hit. I am excited by Hodge’s progress this year. The 2019 draft pick out of high school has a 2.19 ERA this month and has 15 Ks in 12.1 IP. That’s a pretty good start!

The Reliever of the Day came down to 1 vote. Peyton Remy and Manny Espinoza both threw five innings in relief today. Remy behind Riley Thompson, Espinoza behind Palencia. Each threw five innings. Espinoza struck out 6 and allowed 1 hit, Remy surrendered 3 hits but struck out 7. So, in other words, Remy won by 1 K.

I will be back tomorrow morning with The Weekly as I check out the news of the week.
