Cory Abbott – Pic by Baseball America

It was no surprise that Cory Abbott was traded today for cash considerations. The 2019 Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year was, and is, well thought of throughout the minors, his 2021 season withstanding. The San Francisco Giants became the lucky franchise to acquire the Cubs’ 2017 second round pick out of Loyola Marymount who is known for tunneling his pitches and being influenced by Noah Syndergaard on his slider.

Here at North Side Bound, we want to wish Cory the best of luck in San Francisco and are hopeful he will get an opportunity with the Giants very soon. He was one of the first players on the Growing Cubs podcast and a favorite of everyone here.

For whatever reason, the Cubs were not willing to give Abbott a chance after his stellar 2019 campaign. The pandemic could not have come at a worse team for him as he was so close to the majors. Could his fortunes have turned out differently? It is a possibility as well as they could have turned out the same. We will never know.

It is sad it did not work out for Abbott with the Cubs as he does have a career 3.65 ERA in the minors and was never given an extended look in Chicago to earn a spot in either the rotation or bullpen.

The Cubs have until tomorrow morning to trade OF Greg Deichmann, who was DFA’d the same time as Abbott, or risk losing him on waivers by Saturday.

As of right now, it is unclear how Iowa’s rotation is going to change or if they will call up someone from Tennessee. We shall find out very quickly.
