Cubs GM Carter Hawkins

The Chicago Cubs outrighted four players to Iowa from the 40-man roster this morning. Outfielders Trayce Thompson and Nick Martini were sent down to Iowa along with pitchers Kohl Stewart and Johnathan Holder. All four will now be eligible to become minor league free agents on Monday now. This also puts the Cubs’ roster at 34 and, when 5 guys come off the 60-man roster, that will bump it up to 39.

With Free Agency of both the major and minor league variety to begin next week, the Cubs will likely continue to make moves up until November 19. That day is when the Cubs have to name which players they will protect from the Rule 5 Draft. So far, Nelson Velazquez is the only shoe-in.

In the coming weeks, we will keep you updated on moves the Cubs make and most importantly for North Side Bound, the Rule 5 Draft selections.
